Being a sucker for Asian cuisine, I have been to Mamagoto for lunching with friends a while back. We thoroughly enjoyed the place because it reminded me of Pan-Asian street food. The ambience of this place was colorful and vividly resembles the streets of China Town. The tables are closely placed and for all the times I have been there it has always been packed but I would prefer tables to be spaced out a little bit as this one seems to be intruding with our conversation. Even though there was background music it was barely audible because of the noise of the crowd which some might be ok with but I would prefer it to be not that loud.

They recently launched their Bento Box which is a set menu that changes every day and it comes in both Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian options. It usually consists of a starter, salad, stir fry, curry along with a portion of steamed white rice and banana chips. We went on a Wednesday and since that day’s menu had seafood in it we opted for the vegetarian variant. We got an assortment of Tofu in Black Pepper Sauce, Slim Sumo Salad, Veggies with Thai Herbs, Veg Penang Curry on the serving platter and a small portion of Steamed Rice, Banana Chips along with South East Asian Sauce on a regular plate.

What Was In The Bento Box?

  • The Tofu in Black Pepper Sauce wasn’t available on the usual menu and it was a burst of flavors on its own. The perfectly cooked tofu cubes covered in a thick black pepper sauce also had green bell peppers, onions, garlic, scallions and black pepper balls. Though it was spicy we absolutely loved it.
  • The Slim Sumo Salad was a bit of a disappointment. On the regular menu, it was described as a quinoa salad with cherry tomatoes and pineapples but what we got was basically grated sauerkraut, roasted peanuts with barely any cherry tomatoes tossed in thai dressing. It didn’t have much flavor to it and the portion was kind of large.

  • The Veggies with Thai Herbs was a mix of bok choy, broccoli, snow peas, scallions, basil, parsley and other herbs. It wasn’t like a stir fry andtasted more like other salad so to balance it out I would recommend switching this dish with some other.
  • Next comes the Veg Penang Curry, this was the star of the show. It was a perfect blend of coconut milk and peanut butter as base along with veggies like baby corn, mushrooms, broccoli, basil and roasted peanuts as garnishing. Once it was mixed with steamed rice, it tasted absolutely creamy and delicious. It had notes of hot and sweetness to it which elevated the curry even more.
